Desktop Sidebar
It's been what 7 years since Windows came with Active Desktop? Up until about 2 weeks ago I was unaware of any good uses for it. I could use a good calendar that was just a click or glance away... seems like a good use for Active Desktop. Lo, and behold, I find Active Desktop Calendar. It works, it's simple enough, and the Todo-list is very handy. Except that it's crippled shareware. I last purchased software for my own use about 5 years ago... I guess I'm spoiled by open source. So I kept looking, and found the even better Desktop Sidebar. Immediately after the install it was doing just about everything I needed, with a convenient clock, calendar, weather, and todo list. The RSS/Klip/HTML aggregator is pretty damn slick too. It integrates with Outlook (which I hate) but does so behind the scenes so I don't have to see it. Nice. It's freeware too. Hooray.
