Break Down
Wednesday I had the first mechanical failure in one of my Alfas that wasn't my own stupid fault.
Coming home from work on the parkway East (I376), as I was passing the last exit before entrance to the Sq Hill tunnel (over 2 miles ahead) I hear the radio traffic report warning all traffic away from the parkway due to a massive accident that closed the tunnel. A few hundred feet ahead I'm at a dead stop in a sea of traffic.
We inched along for a few minutes, covering only a few car lengths. While my foot was on the clutch... WHAM the clutch pedal slammed to the floor and my Milano lurched forward. I popped it into neutral and coasted to what little shoulder there was in the right-most lane. I called AAA for a tow, and settled in to wait. About 15mins later a PennDOT tow truck pulled up. They patrol this strech of road to move disabled vehicles out of the way, and luckily he happened to be stuck in traffic near me. It took over an hour for the tow truck to tow me a half mile to where the shoulder was wider. We then bypassed the remaining traffic to the Sq Hill exit. He then dropped me off, and called AAA for another tow. I killed a hour waiting for the tow truck at Starbucks, where I ran into a friend. We discussed dangerous topics as he's a new father. The tow home was uneventful. It was sad that the tow truck driver had no idea what an "Alfer Romero" was... "Is that German?" sigh.
I took the next day off to work on the car. I found that the clutch pivot ball had snapped, effectively disabling the clutch. Luckily, I have a spare gearbox, and I transplanted its pivot ball. I also replaced the transmission mounts, deDion bush, and lubed the input shaft (possible culprit leading to the broken pivot.) Everything looks to be all better now.
