For about the last 12 years I've been sleeping on a king sized, soft-sided waterbed. It served me very well (probably the best $200 I've ever spent) and I was reluctant to replace it. However it was clearly past it's prime, and had recently developed a leak which was a pain to repair. It's no fun groggily waking up in the middle of the night thinking "I don't remember going to bed in a wet spot!?" So we went shopping for a new bed, but we found that the waterbed market had more or less imploded. Very few models were availible... even when we searched on the internet. This setback was an opportunity to consider other options... Deb wasn't as keen on the waterbed as I was. While shopping around we happened upon a memory foam bed. It's hard to really adequately evaluate a matress in a store, but from a quick test, it seemed to have the right mixture of give and support. The price tag was pretty damn firm though... even on sale a king sized matress was going to be in the $2000 range. Back home. and back on the internet... We found Flobeds.com. They have some pretty slick designs... air, memory foam, latex, and water. I really liked the designs and all the information on their website. Even the Cadillac models were cheaper than the stores around here. I found the latex foam making process surprisingly facinating. As nice as the flobeds looked, we ended up going with Bergad's isoform. . Epinions reviews of the Isoform matress, the significant price difference ($950 delivered), and the fact that the factory is less than an hour away finally sealed the deal. It was delivered a few days ago. The matress is pretty basic... a thin strechy cover over a thick slab of memory foam which is bonded to a thick slab of polyurethane foam. Initially, I was a little nervous... It was a bit firmer than what I expected (especially compared to an underfilled waterbed) but after a few nights sleep I'm happy to report that it makes a very fine bed. It has just enough give that I can comfortably sleep on my side. Deb claims that I snore less on it... I can neither confirm nor deny that, but so far I am dreaming almost non-stop while sleeping on this matress. Maybe the two are related.
