I ordered a ton of new hardware to assemble a HTPC (home theater pc). It's been 5 or 6 years since I last had a computer at home (other than my laptop). So I did my homework and refamiliarized myself with the state of the art. Multiple FedEx trucks (groud and air) brought delivered all my goodies today. I started putting everything together this evening. By far it was the most painless PC I ever built. It only took about 45 minutes or so before I was ready to turn it on. The is the part of the story when everything goes to hell. As I tried to install XP, I discovered that my swank 250GB SATA drive needed some drivers for the OS to find it. Damn. I thought SATA was around long enough to be supported out of the box. OK, I'll just supply it the driver during the install... It wasn't nearly that easy. I'll omit all the gory details because it's almost as irratating to describe them as it was to suffer through them. The end result was I wasted about 5 hours and ended up just buying another 80gig IDE drive. Sure I could have worked around it, but I just didn't care. But now I'm asking myself... "Why have I brought this beast into my own home?" I already waste too much time in front of either my TV or my computer (most often both.) So now I'm building a computer that enhances my TV. I must be insane.
