I was dismayed to find that my new PC was fast, but not fast enough to run ffdshow resizing video to 960x540 (which is an easy 2x scale up to my TV's native 1920x1080 resolution) while also appling some sharpening and denoise filters. It worked ok for DVDs, but I was dropping frames with movies that had been ripped to DivX. I futzed about with Overclocking my AMD 2800+. Without uping any of the voltages, I could get it pretty stable at 180mhz FSB, but it seemed to have little real effect. I labored on into the night changing a setting here, toggling something there... I'm not exactly sure what finally did it, but I now have no problems with DivX souce, in fact, I'm seeing only about 45% CPU utilization. *sweet* I also reattached the cpu heatsink, this time using Arcticsilver thermal paste. I'm seeing cpu temps about 2 or 3 degrees cooler. Woopie.
