I write large check for local taxes and mail it 4/15. Said locality waits until 6/10 to cash check. I pay the dishwasher repair guy 6/2, it is deposited June 10th. Bank records for both checks show a transaction date of 6/10 but an effective date of 6/9 Monthly automated mortgage payment and credit card payments also post 6/9 I make large deposit, transaction date 6/10 and effective date 6/10 Only day in last 6 months my checking account balance was below the combined total of the two checks: 6/9 So at the end of 6/10 I have a large postive balance, both checks clear, but I still get dinged $30 for overdraft. Even better, the bank, effective 6/1, changed their policy on check cashing... the above sequence would not have resulted in an overdraft previously.
